This article applies to you if the NordPass extension in your Chrome browser is called NordPass® (legacy). If it is called NordPass® Password Manager & Digital Vault, you are already on the current extension and don't need to do anything.
What's happening
We are retiring the Chrome extension called NordPass® (legacy) on January 1, 2027. From that date, you won't be able to access your vault with the legacy extension.
To keep using NordPass in Chrome, install the current extension, NordPass® Password Manager & Digital Vault, before then. It takes about two minutes. Log in with the same NordPass account, and all your passwords and other items will be there as before.
| Date | What happens |
| Now until December 31, 2026 | The legacy extension remains supported, but no more updates after version 7.12. Starting with version 7.12, it shows a reminder each time you unlock it. |
| January 1, 2027 | The legacy extension stops working. It only shows a notice that it is no longer supported. |
| By January 20, 2027 | The legacy extension is removed from the Chrome Web Store. |
Your data is safe throughout. Your passwords, passkeys, notes, cards, and other items are stored encrypted in your NordPass vault, not inside the extension. Removing the legacy extension does not delete anything.
Why we're retiring it
For some time, NordPass has had two Chrome extensions that do exactly the same thing. They have the same features and receive the same updates, but they are published as two separate extensions. Keeping two identical copies makes it harder for us to roll out updates and security fixes quickly and to support you well. We are bringing everyone onto a single extension so that every NordPass user in Chrome gets the same improvements at the same time.
How to check which extension you have
- In Chrome, type "chrome://extensions" in the address bar and press "Enter".
- Find NordPass in the list and check its name:
- NordPass® (legacy): you need to switch. Follow the steps below.
- NordPass® Password Manager & Digital Vault: you are on the current extension. No action needed.
- Both are installed: you already have the current one installed. Jump to step 5 below to remove the legacy extension.
Note: You will also see a reminder inside the legacy extension each time you unlock it, starting with version 7.12.
How to switch to the current extension
Have your NordPass login details and your Master Password ready. You will need both to log in to the new extension.
Important note: The NordPass® Password Manager & Digital Vault will require you to set up biometrics again. If you don’t remember your Master Password and rely on biometric authentication in the NordPass® (legacy) extension, retrieve a new Recovery Code using biometric authentication, then change your Master Password using the Recovery Code.
Step 1 - Install the current extension
- Open the extension page in the Chrome Web Store.
- Click the "Add to Chrome" button.
- Next, click the "Add extension" button to confirm.
Note: Make sure the page name reads NordPass® Password Manager & Digital Vault.
Step 2 - Pin it to your toolbar
- Click the puzzle-piece icon to the right of the address bar.
- Find "NordPass® Password Manager & Digital Vault" and click the pin icon next to it.
Step 3 - Log in
- Click the NordPass icon in your toolbar.
- Log in with the same NordPass account you used before.
- Enter your Master Password to unlock your vault.
Note: All your items appear exactly as they were. Nothing needs to be exported, imported, or re-saved.
Step 4 - Let the current extension turn off the legacy one
When you install the current extension, it automatically disables the legacy extension so that you don't get two sets of autofill suggestions. You can confirm this at chrome://extensions: the switch next to NordPass® (legacy) is now off.
Step 5 - Remove the legacy extension
- Go to chrome://extensions.
- Under "NordPass® (legacy)", click the "Remove" button.
- Next, click "Remove" again to confirm.
Step 6 - Check that everything works
- chrome://extensions shows only "NordPass® Password Manager & Digital Vault", and it is turned on.
- Click the NordPass icon, unlock your vault, and check that your items are there.
- Open a website where you have a saved login. NordPass should offer to autofill it.
What happens if I do nothing?
Until December 31, 2026, the legacy extension is supported and shows a reminder when you unlock it. However, you will not receive any more updates after 7.12. Starting January 1, 2027, the legacy extension will no longer let you unlock your vault or autofill. It only shows a notice that it is no longer supported. Your data stays safe in your NordPass account. To get back to using NordPass in Chrome, install the current extension at any time by following the steps above.
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose any passwords, notes, or other items?
No. Your items are stored encrypted in your NordPass account and synced to every device and browser where you are logged in. When you log in to the current extension, everything is already there.
Do I need to export my data first?
No. There is nothing to export or import. Just install the current extension and log in.
Do I need to pay again or change my subscription?
No. Your NordPass account and plan stay exactly the same. The extension is just a different way to access the same account.
Is the current extension different from the one I have?
Today, no. However, the NordPass® (legacy) extension will stop receiving updates after 7.12 (October 2026 update), so it will no longer receive new updates.
Will my settings carry over?
Everything tied to your account carries over: your items, folders, shared items, Password Health and Data Breach Scanner results, and security settings. A few preferences that live inside the extension itself may need to be set again. Check "Settings" in the new extension after logging in.
I installed the current extension, and the legacy one shows as disabled. Is that normal?
Yes. The current extension turns off the legacy one automatically so you don't get duplicate suggestions. You can remove the legacy extension at any time.
I see two NordPass icons in my toolbar. What should I do?
Remove the legacy extension. Then pin the current one if it isn't pinned yet.
Why didn't I know I was on a legacy version?
We ran multiple communication campaigns in the past to migrate people to the current extension, but always gave the legacy extension the same updates, so it looked and behaved identically. Version 7.12 is its last update.
Does this affect the NordPass desktop app, mobile apps, or other browsers?
No. Only the Chrome extension named "NordPass® (legacy)" is affected. The NordPass apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, and the extensions for Firefox, Edge, Safari, Opera and Brave continue to work as usual.
I use Edge, Brave, Opera or Vivaldi and installed NordPass from the Chrome Web Store. Does this apply to me?
Yes, if the extension is named "NordPass® (legacy)". Follow the same steps. In these browsers the extensions page is edge://extensions, brave://extensions, opera://extensions or vivaldi://extensions.
I'm an administrator for NordPass Business, Teams or Enterprise. Do I need to do anything?
If you deploy the NordPass extension to your users with Group Policy, Microsoft Intune or another management tool, update the extension ID in your policy before January 1, 2027:
- Legacy extension (retiring): fooolghllnmhmmndgjiamiiodkpenpbb
- Current extension: eiaeiblijfjekdanodkjadfinkhbfgcd
Note: Users cannot remove an extension that is force-installed by policy, so the switch must be turned on. See How to deploy NordPass extension through Group Policies and How to deploy NordPass extension through Microsoft Intune. If your users installed the extension themselves, ask them to follow the steps in this article.
Can I keep using the legacy extension after January 1, 2027 if I block Chrome from updating it?
No. From January 1, 2027, you can no longer use the legacy extension with NordPass, whether or not it is updated. Please switch before then.
I switched, but something isn't working.
Try these first:
- Make sure you are logged in to the same NordPass account you used before. Check the email address under "Settings" in the extension.
- Make sure the legacy extension is removed, not just disabled.
- Restart Chrome.
- If that doesn't help, contact our support team — we are available 24/7.
