NordPass standalone extension FAQ

The new NordPass extension offers a way to use NordPass without installing the desktop application. With the new extension, our users can enjoy a smoother experience without losing any of the features that the NordPass desktop application offers. 

 

In this guide, you will find instructions on switching to the new NordPass extension and the main information about the new NordPass browser experience. 

 

How to check if you have the new extension

 

You can check which version of the NordPass extension you have installed in your browser's Extensions tab. The new extension is called 'NordPass Password Manager & Digital Vault'. If you see 'NordPass (desktop app version)', that means you have an old extension and need to update to the new one.

How to switch to the new NordPass extension

Installing the new extension on Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave, and other Chromium-based browsers



  1. Go to Chrome Web Store and search for 'NordPass' or use this link. Make sure to choose ‘NordPass® Password Manager & Digital Vault’.

  2. Select Add to Chrome.

  3. Open the Extensions menu by clicking the puzzle piece icon next to the address bar and click the Pin icon to access NordPass more easily.

Installing the new extension on Firefox



  1. Go to Firefox add-ons page and search for 'NordPass' or use this link. Make sure to choose ‘NordPass® Password Manager & Digital Vault’.

  2. Select Add to Firefox.

Installing the new extension on Safari



  1. Go to the App Store and search for NordPass, or use this link.

  2. Select the download button.

  3. NordPass will be added to your Safari browser. Click the blue NordPass icon next to the address bar to open NordPass.

How to uninstall NordPass (desktop app version) extension

 

If you have been using NordPass before and have just installed NordPass new extension, there are likely two NordPass extensions installed on your browser. NordPass will automatically disable the NordPass (desktop app version) extension so it does not interfere with the new extension. You can learn more about it in the FAQ section under ‘What will happen if I have both extensions installed?’.

 

The steps below will explain how to fully remove the NordPass (desktop app version) extension from different browsers. 

 

Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave and other Chromium-based browsers

 

 

  1. Type in chrome://extensions/ in the address bar or open Extensions > Manage Extensions to see which extensions you have added.

  2. Select Remove button under ‘NordPass (desktop app version)’.

In addition, you can also uninstall the NordPass desktop application if you want. 

Firefox

 

  1. Type in about:addons in the address bar or open Extensions > Manage Extensions to see which extensions you have added.

  2. Select three dots icon next to ‘NordPass (desktop app version)’ and click Remove.

In addition, you can also uninstall the NordPass desktop application if you want. 

Safari

 

To remove the NordPass (desktop app version) extension from Safari, you will need to fully uninstall the NordPass desktop application from your macOS device. You can find instructions here

Below is the main information about the new NordPass browser experience:

  • What will happen with the desktop app and my current way of using NordPass?

Nothing! You are free to choose how you want to use NordPass, all platforms will be supported. Regardless, we encourage you to try out the new extension, and switch back if you still find it more convenient to use it the desktop way.

  • What is the difference between NordPass (desktop app version) and new NordPass extensions?

The key difference is that the new NordPass extension does not depend on the desktop application. You can enjoy a smoother experience without losing any of the NordPass desktop application features.

  • What will happen if I have both extensions installed?

You will receive the error message below if you have two NordPass extensions installed at the same time. The extension paired with the desktop app will be automatically disabled to prevent interruptions.

  • Can I continue using NordPass (desktop app version)?

Yes, you can continue using the NordPass extension paired with the desktop application. In that case, make sure that you have only the NordPass (desktop app version) extension installed.

  • Can I use biometrics to unlock the new NordPass extension?

Yes, biometrics can be used to unlock the NordPass extension instead of entering your Master Password. 

 

Biometric unlock is not yet available on Firefox MacOS.

 

  • Why am I asked to create a passkey when setting up biometric unlock?

You might see a pop-up in your browser when setting up biometric unlock for NordPass. It is a part of the biometric unlock setup in NordPass. Select Continue in the pop-up to enable biometrics.

  • Can I use the NordPass extension on multiple browsers?

Yes. However, unlike the desktop version, the new NordPass extension can have separate accounts connected to each browser or browser profile. This way, you can have NordPass readily available on your work and personal browser profiles without having to switch accounts in the app.

 

In comparison, the desktop app version simply connects to the account you’re using on the desktop application and applies it to every browser and browser profile you are on.

  • Do I need to log in separately to the desktop application?

Yes, since the NordPass extension works independently from the desktop application, you will need to log in to the extension and application individually.

  • Why is NordPass locked when I open my browser? 

NordPass automatically locks when the autolock period is reached or when the browser is closed.

You can change the autolock period in NordPass Settings. Learn more about the Autolock feature here



To keep NordPass unlocked after the browser is closed, enable the Keep extension unlocked feature. We recommend enabling it only if you use the extension on a trusted device.

Note: If you have a Business Account, your organization’s Owner or Admin needs to enable additional settings in the Admin Panel to use Keep extension unlocked feature. Learn more here

  • I was using NordPass Beta Chrome extension, do I need to take any steps? 

The NordPass Beta extension was automatically upgraded to the full version, and no extra steps are needed from your side.
