Introduction
The NordPass Authenticator feature allows NordPass to be used as an authenticator to websites and applications that support two-factor authentication (2FA) without having to use a third-party authentication application. It would generate a temporary six-digit code called a Two-factor code by using the current time as its authentication factor.
This guide will explain how to use the NordPass Authenticator feature.
Before you start
Currently, the NordPass Authenticator feature is available on Android, iOS applications, and the NordPass extension (Chromium-based browsers on macOS and Windows, and Firefox for Windows).
Note: The NordPass authentication feature can be used simultaneously on multiple browser extensions and mobile devices with iOS and Android operating systems.
Here's what to do
Add account to NordPass Authenticator
If you wish to add an account to the NordPass Authenticator, follow these steps:
- Navigate to the website where you want to add a two-factor code and log in to your account. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is usually set up via the account's settings in the password or security tab.
- Select the authenticator app as your authentication method. When prompted to scan a QR code or enter a setup code, open your NordPass app or extension, log in, and add the code there by following the steps below.
- If you are already using a different authenticator application, temporarily disable two-factor authentication on your account and enable it again using NordPass Authenticator.
- Select the respective Password item in the NordPass application or extension to open it, and choose the "Edit" option.
- Next, select the "Add Two-factor Code" button.
Note: If you have not enabled the NordPass Authenticator feature yet, you will be asked to set it up first.
- Select the "Enter code manually" option to add a two-factor code to NordPass. Alternatively, if you are using a mobile application, tap the “Scan QR code” button
View and copy two-factor codes
To view or copy the two-factor codes of your particular item in your Vault, follow these steps:
- Open the Password item in the NordPass application or extension and select the "Show" button next to the TOTP code.
- Confirm your identity with biometrics to view the two-factor code.
- To copy the two-factor code, select the "Copy" button.
Auto-filling Two-Factor Codes
Two-factor codes can also be auto-filled just like the usernames and passwords saved in the NordPass vault. If you wish to auto-fill two-factor, follow these steps:
- Open your desired application and tap on the login field. When the NordPass autofill suggestion appears, simply select it to automatically fill in your account information.
- Once the account's information is accepted, you will be asked to enter the two-factor code. Confirm biometrics in NordPass to auto-fill the code.
Note: The two-factor code can be auto-filled only if NordPass auto-filled the account's username and password. If they were entered manually, the code will need to be copied from the application or extension.
Remove Two-Factor Codes
If the two-factor code generated by the NordPass Authenticator is no longer used to log in, it can be removed from NordPass by following these steps:
- Open the Password item in your NordPass application or extension, and choose the "Edit" option.
- Select the "Delete" icon near the Two-Factor Code, and confirm your choice by pressing the "Remove" button.
Shared items with Two-Factor Codes
NordPass Authenticator functionality allows adding two-factor codes to shared Password items, increasing your account's security level. Below is the main information on sharing items with two-factor codes and adding two-factor codes to a shared item:
- Personal subscription users can share their items with other personal, business subscription, and family plan users.
- Business subscription users can share their items with other organizations’ business users, as well as with personal subscription users.
- Personal subscription users can add TOTP to the password items that business subscription users shared.
Additionals tips
- Please remember not to share your Master Password with anyone. If you don't use multi-factor authentication in NordPass to log in, do not store the login credentials for your NordPass sign-up email address in your Vault.
- Do not store TOTP for NordPass inside NordPass Authenticator, as you may block yourself from using apps or extensions when logged out on all platforms.
