Introduction
This guide explains how to download and install the NordPass CLI on desktop devices.
Before you start
To ensure everything works properly, make sure to use these supported platforms:
- Windows (x64 and arm64)
- macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon)
- Linux (x86_64 and aarch64)
Here's what to do
Windows
- Open Windows and open PowerShell by pressing the "Win" and "R" keys, typing "powershell," and pressing "Enter."
Next, enter the following command to install NordPass CLI on your device:
irm https://downloads.npass.app/cli/install.ps1 | iex
macOS
- Open your macOS device, press the "Command (⌘)" and " Space" buttons to open Spotlight, type "Terminal", and press "Return" to open it.
Next, enter the following command to install NordPass CLI on your device:
curl -fsSL https://downloads.npass.app/cli/install.sh | bashAlternatively, if you are using Homebrew on macOS, use these commands to install the NordPass CLI:
brew tap nordpass/tap https://downloads.npass.app/cli/homebrew-tap.git brew install nordpass/tap/npTo update to the latest version, use these commands:
brew update brew upgrade np
Note: When installed via Homebrew (or any package manager):
- The
np updatecommand will not work; you must usebrew upgrade npinstead - Updates are managed entirely by Homebrew
Linux
Open your Linux device and run the following command:
curl -fsSL https://downloads.npass.app/cli/install.sh | bash
Manual installation
The install script is the recommended path: it verifies the signature of the release manifest and of the binary. A manual install relies on the checksum step below only:
Read the release manifest from https://downloads.npass.app/cli/versions.json. Its payload field is base64-encoded JSON that lists the download URL and sha256 for every platform by running such a command:
curl -fsSL https://downloads.npass.app/cli/versions.json | jq -r .payload | base64 -d | jq- Download the binary for your platform.
- (Optional but recommended): Verify the hash by running sha256sum (Linux), shasum -a 256 (macOS), or Get-FileHash (Windows) on the binary you downloaded and compare it against the one listed in the release manifest.
On macOS and Linux, run:
chmod +x npMove the binary to a directory on your PATH, for example ~/.local/bin:
mkdir -p ~/.local/bin && mv np ~/.local/bin/npFor Windows, run these commands instead using PowerShell:
1. mkdir "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Programs\NordPass CLI" -Force 2. move np.exe "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Programs\NordPass CLI\np.exeIf you wish to verify the installation, use the following command:
np --version
Note: If you get a "command not found" error, make sure the installation directory is on your PATH.
Additional Tips
- Default install directory on macOS and Linux: ~/.local/bin; %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\NordPass CLI on Windows.
- A script or manual install updates itself. The command reads the signed release manifest, downloads the new binary, verifies it, and replaces the current one:
np --update. To only check whether a newer version is available:np --check
