How to register a security key in Firefox on macOS

Introduction

On macOS, Firefox browser version 122.0 and later may not let you register a physical security key for NordPass Business MFA. The browser can show a passkey or Touch ID prompt instead of your USB or NFC key — and setup never finishes. This affects adding a key in Firefox; signing in with a key you already registered usually works without changing Firefox settings.

 

This guide will explain how to register your physical security key for NordPass Business MFA if you experience such an issue during NordPass setup.

 

Here's what to do

Change Firefox setting

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. In the address bar, type "about: config" and press Enter.
  3. If you see a warning, click on the "Accept the Risk and Continue" button. 
  4. In the Search box, paste "security.webauthn.enable_macos_passkeys".
  5. On the right, click the toggle button to change the value from true to false.
  6. Quit Firefox completely (Firefox → Quit Firefox, or Cmd + Q), then open it again. 

 

Register your security key in NordPass

  1. Sign in to your NordPass Business account in Firefox or open the setup link from your invite.
  2. When NordPass asks you to set up MFA, choose the "Security key" option and follow the prompts.
  3. Tap or insert your key when the Firefox browser asks. 
  4. Give your key a name (for example, Main key) and complete MFA setup for your NordPass Business user account using our guide.

 

Additional Tips

  • If you use Touch ID or passkeys on other websites in Firefox, turn the setting back on:
    1. Open "about: config" again.
    2. Set "security.webauthn.enable_macos_passkeys" back to true.
    3. Restart Firefox. Your NordPass security key will still work for sign-in after it is registered.
