MSP Master Password is a high-privilege administrative credential that grants MSP members access to encrypted tenant organization data. It is used to derive MSP decryption keys and, in line with NordPass's zero-knowledge principle, is never stored or known by NordPass. Keeping your MSP Master Password and its Recovery Code secure is critical, as NordPass cannot recover them if lost.
This guide will explain how to set up and use the MSP Master Password.
Before you start
- You must have an MSP account and log in to the MSP Admin panel to set up a Master Password.
- Ensure that two or more MSP Admins have created and secured their Master Password — this is essential for account recovery if one is lost.
- Keep both the Master Password and its Recovery Code in a safe location.
Here's what to do
How to set up the Master Password
MSP members can log in and browse the MSP admin panel without a Master Password. However, one will be required for the following restricted actions:
- Creating a new NordPass-enabled organization
- Accessing a NordPass organization's data
- Assigning a NordPass organization to an MSP Technician
- Transferring MSP ownership to another MSP Admin
- Accepting requests to attach an organization to MSP
- Other restricted actions
When you attempt any of these actions, you will be prompted to create or enter your Master Password.
How to adjust the Master Password session time
- Navigate to the "Settings" page of the MSP admin panel, and locate the "Master Password session" section.
- Choose the duration after which all MSP members will be asked to re-enter their Master Password.
- Once the selected time expires, users will be prompted for their Master Password when attempting any restricted action.
Additional Tips
- NordPass is built on the zero-knowledge principle - if you lose your MSP Master Password, it cannot be recovered by NordPass.
- We recommend keeping the Master Password session time as short as possible.
