Introduction
The Data Breach Scanner by NordPass is a tool designed to detect if your personal data has been compromised in a data breach. It scans the web for leaked databases, looking for mentions of email addresses and credit cards you provided.
This guide will explain how to use the Data Breach Scanner feature.
Here's what to do
How to set up the Data Breach Scanner
- Open the NordPass application, select "Data Breach Scanner" at the bottom-left corner.
Note: If you are using a mobile device, Data Breach Scanner will be in the "Tools" section of the navigation.
- Select the "+ Add" button and choose either the "@ Email Address" or the "Credit Card" option.
- If you have chosen to monitor your email address, enter it and select the "Continue" button.
- Next, enter the verification code you have received at your email address and press the "Verify" button.
Note: If you have not received the verification code, select the "Resend Code" button.
- If you have chosen to monitor your credit card, enter its number and select the "Verify" button.
- Select the "Confirm" button to acknowledge and verify that you are the primary cardholder or an authorized user.
Note: There is a limit of 50 cards in the monitored credit card list.
- If you want to stop monitoring an asset, select the "Three-dots" button next to it, select the "Stop Monitoring" button, and click on the "Stop Monitoring" button once more to confirm your choice.
How to investigate breaches
- You will see one of the two NordPass Data Breach Scanner banners: a red banner that informs you if there are any new or unresolved breaches, and a green banner that indicates your data has not appeared in any breaches. Click on the asset you want to check out.
- If you have selected an email address, select one of the breaches from the list and click on the "Reveal Leaked Data" to see full details.
- Alternatively, if you have chosen a credit card, open the breach to see more information. NordPass will provide more details about the breach, including which credit card details were affected and when, in addition to security recommendations.
- If the breach is no longer relevant or you have already updated your leaked data, select the "Mark as Resolved" button.
Note: Remember, to change your password for the leaked account, you must first update it on the affected website and only then update it in NordPass.
Additional Tips
- We highly recommend using our Password Generator to improve your security.
- If the domain is unknown, we cannot provide further clarification with that specific entry. This occurs because data found on the dark web can be incomplete - we may find out about the total scope of data categories, but data itself may be missing. In either case, we will inform you when your email address or credit card is found, regardless of the data completeness. It is important that you change any passwords you may be using with the exposed credentials.
